…do they follow through? Not so much, according to a survey conducted a couple of years ago by the Southeastern Institute of Research/Boomer Project.
About 1,400 adults 50+ were asked the following questions:
1. How important do you believe the following activities are to staying healthy? (Results are percentage of those who said "very important.")
2. How often do you do these activities? (Results are percentage of those who said "do all the time.”)
Very Important to Do Actually Do All the Time
Exercise Regularly 67% 21%
Eat a Balanced Diet 67% 28%
Drink Plenty of Water 65% 44%
Watch My Weight 64% 27%
Get Routine Healthcare 63% 49%
Get Enough Sleep 63% 29%
Watch What I Eat 61% 28%
Take Vitamins 45% 50%
Limit Calories 44% 16%
The results show that we are very good at drinking plenty of water, getting routine healthcare and taking vitamins and not so good at the more difficult habits of exercising regularly and eating a balanced diet.
That only proves that we already know what we need to do to be at our best health-wise. It’s just putting it into action that’s the problem. No easy answers here, that’s for certain.
