Yes, someone does keep track of unpopular words and phrases in our ever evolving pop culture. Some are made up; some are related (loosely) to real words and some are just plain annoying.
I conducted a very unscientific survey to come up with words that might bother the average Baby Boomer. Please feel free to send me yours so I can add them to the list.
Here we go:
Reach out: Don't you just mean call?
Cougar: An older woman interested in a younger man.
It is what it is: Yeah, so?
Tebowed: An extremely unpopular term (whatever it means) with the Steeler Nation.
Trending: As in going in a general direction.
Ginormous: A attempt to outdo other words meaning Huge-a-mundo.
Baby bump: A Hollywood creation no doubt.
Amazing/Awesome: Two of my favorite words, unfortunately.
Are you Serious? A fav football comment.
The New Normal: It's not so new anymore.
Tighten up: Tighten the rules, stiffen the regulations.
Others that could have made the list are homeboy, suck, Red Zone, occupy, "bro", hot and sexting.
Now your turn. Send me your ideas for words and phrases that should be banished but will probably instead make it into the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
I received some great idea from readers for other words or phrases that Baby Boomers love to hate. Included were Follow on Twitter, Like on FaceBook, Skyping, spamming, drilling down, "I know. Right?" "That being said" and "I'm just saying". Thank you!
