Boomers Blog it Better

You have probably heard about blogging and are more than likely reading blogs from other people now and then. But for those of you who don’t know, a blog is nothing more than a website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in a reverse chronological order.

Most website owners are choosing to have their websites created using blogging software such as Blogger and Wordpress because it allows users with basic computer skills to edit their site easily without a web designer. Blogs also tend to rank higher in search engine results and are definitely an effective and inexpensive way to promote your business and services.

Here are some tips from the 2 Tech Divas to get you started:

1. Think about what you want to focus on.

It’s always good to take some time to think about what exactly you will blog about. Look at other blogs by searching in Google using the word “blog” and keywords that represent your focus. For example: “financial blogs”, “knitting blogs”, “cooking blogs” and so on. See what others are doing and how you can be different.

2. Sign up for a free blog.

You can go to www.blogger.com or www.wordpress.com  and get a free blog account. Blogger is great for the beginner, but Wordpress has more sophisticated templates available to give you more of a website look.

3. Get a domain name.

When you get your link to your blog by signing up with one of the above services, you will get a link like: yourname.blogspot.com or yourname.wordpress.com. While this is OK, it would be much better if you purchased a domain name at www.godaddy.com for $10 per year and make it redirect to your blog link. This way, you can tell people to visit you at www.yourname.com. When you purchase a name at GoDaddy, you can redirect your new domain name in the account settings.

4. Set a schedule.

It’s best to set up a schedule for how often you will blog. Will it be daily, weekly or monthly? This will depend on what you are blogging about and how often you have new information to deliver to your audience. Credibility is lost when you visit a site that hasn’t had a new blog post in over six months! So be consistent and keep your visitors wanting to come back for more. Also, the more you update your blog, the more your rankings on the search engines will improve as well.

5. Practice makes you a better blogger.

Yes, the more you blog, the better your writing skills will become. Introduce yourself to your audience and write from the heart. Keep your writing style the same as your own personality.

6. Comment on other blogs.

You want people to visit your blog and a great way to gain more visitors and credibility is to leave comments on the posts of other blogs in your industry. Make sure you leave a comment that is valuable to the readers. Leave something with substance (other than “Great post!”) along with a link to your blog and others will think, “Hmmm, he seems to know what he is talking about,” and possibly click your link to find out more about you.

Blogging is an excellent tool to improve your market presence on the internet. Even if you have a website, we still strongly suggest getting a blog. The best thing about starting a blog -- It’s free!
